If you want to lead a lighter life, consider me your cheerleader. Back in 1992, I lost 50 pounds the old-fashioned way through exercise and eating better. Since there’s not much out there on life once the diet is over, I’m here to share the success stories of real women, scoop from my seventeen years as an “after,” and more.
Growing up as the daughter of a deli owner in Columbia, South Carolina, emotional eating was as regular as breathing. Extra weight was always an issue. Always the overachiever, I managed to turn the “freshman fifteen” into thirty pounds during college through midnight pizza deliveries, free alcohol at frat parties and a love for anything chocolate. I was fifty pounds overweight by age twenty-six, and constantly exhausted. The formal diet plans I tried didn’t work, because I wasn’t ready yet.
What did turn things around was therapy, which spurred a desire to treat myself more like a friend than a trans fats addict. Rather than set a weight loss goal, I just wanted to feel better. So, I researched the latest nutritional and health information, learned the incredible importance of drinking water, clipped and pasted magazine success stories into a notebook for inspiration, took my measurements and started my quest. It took me about 15 months to lose the weight, because I was determined to keep if off for good.
Recognizing the powerful role success stories played in motivating my long-term weight loss, I am working on a book about that focuses on life after the diet. Have been interviewing women nationwide who have maintained a significant weight loss for at least five years and look forward to sharing their insights with you! And when I’m not writing about the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle or trying to sneak in an extra Pilates class, I run an award-winning boutique PR firm (www.shiramiller.com) in Atlanta, Georgia. Hope you enjoy these posts!
